What is in your candles?
At Horrified Candles, we care about your lair as much as you do. That’s why every candle is crafted with our coconut-apricot wax —designed to burn clean, even, and eerily steady. It’s non-toxic, eco-conscious, and safe for your family, pets, and any spirits that might be lingering.
Why no soy wax?
Because most soy is genetically modified, and many customers (as well as myself) have experienced headaches, allergies, or other sensitivities with soy-based candles. We believe you shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality for comfort—or risk summoning a migraine.
Our fragrances are a carefully tested blend of essential oils and high-quality synthetic oils—always phthalate-free—to create bold, hauntingly immersive scents without the toxins.

Do You Use Essential Oils?
We don’t use pure essential oils in our candles—and there’s a wickedly good reason for that. While they’re perfect for diffusers or personal care, they’re not cut out for the open flame. Here’s why we steer clear:
- Toxic Compounds: Some essential oils release harmful chemicals when heated—definitely not the kind of horror you want in your home.
- Breakdown Under Heat: Once exposed to flame, essential oils lose their benefits, leaving you with a higher price tag and no perks.
- Fire Hazard: Certain essential oils can actually increase the risk of fire when burned directly in wax.
- Weak Scent Throw: Pure essential oils don’t pack the punch needed to fill a room with a lingering, immersive aroma.
- Inefficiency: It takes thousands of rose petals to make a pound of rose essential oil—and even then, it won’t give you a strong-smelling candle.
Instead, we use premium fragrance oils, carefully crafted for candle use. These blends often include real essential oils but are combined with safe, stable synthetic and organic compounds to create bold, hauntingly good scents that are clean-burning and non-toxic.
And here’s the truth: most brands claiming “made with essential oils” are doing the same thing—it’s just clever marketing. We prefer to keep it honest.

When will my order ship, and how long will they take to arrive?
Our process is unique because every candle is hand-poured right here in Canada, made specifically for you when you order.
- Processing Time: Since we focus on quality over mass production, please allow 5–8 business days for your order to be processed, crafted, and packaged before it ships. Perfection (and a little darkness) takes time!
- Shipping Time: Once your order has left our hands, the delivery time is in the carrier's control. You will receive an email with your tracking number, so you can watch its terrifying journey all the way to your door!
What are your shipping costs?

Small Orders: If your order is under that, shipping is a flat rate of $10.99.

What is your return policy?
If your candle doesn't feel like the right fit for your haunted haven, you can exchange any full-size, unburned candle within 30 days of delivery. No strange rituals required!

What if my order is damaged?
If your candle arrives damaged or something feels… off, we’ll make it right—on our dollar.

Candle Care and Tips
Why does my candle say best burned after?
This instruction refers to the Cure Time of the candle, which is a key process for achieving the best fragrance performance.
- What is Curing? Curing is the time a candle needs to sit after it's been made, allowing the fragrance oils to fully and evenly mix, or "bind," with the wax. Think of it like aging a fine wine—it gets better with a little patience!
- The "Luxury Wax" Advantage: Because your candle is made with a natural wax blend like Coconut Apricot, it is a softer wax and benefits greatly from a slightly longer cure time. This allows the wax to fully harden and crystalize, which is essential for trapping and slowly releasing the scent.
- Optimal Fragrance: While you can burn the candle sooner, a proper cure time ensures the strongest and most robust scent throw (how far the fragrance travels) when your candle is lit.
- Our Recommendation: For this specific wax blend, we recommend letting your candle cure for at least two weeks (14 days) from the pour date. This is the sweet spot where the fragrance has fully married the wax, resulting in a significantly stronger and more consistent scent experience for you to enjoy.
How strong are your candles?
It all depends on the candle—and your personal senses.
Some of our fragrances are bold and haunting, filling a room with their commanding presence. Others are more subtle, designed to linger in the background like a ghostly whisper—perfect for quiet evenings, focused moments, or winding down after a long day.
Think of it like adjusting the dimmer on a light. Some prefer a bright, vivid glow, while others enjoy a softer, more ambient touch. And just like with perfume or coffee, scent strength is deeply personal—what feels intense to one person might be just right for another.
For larger spaces or open layouts, you may need multiple candles to fully cast their aromatic spell.

For the perfect burn from the start:
- Trim the wick to ⅛–¼ inch before lighting.
- Burn in a draft-free, well-ventilated space.
- Look for a steady, even flame—no wild flickering or towering flames.
Savoring the Scent
Our fragrances are layered like a ghost story, revealing themselves over time:
- Top notes are the first to greet you—bright, herbal, or citrusy.
- Middle notes form the heart—spices, florals, or fruits.
- Base notes linger like a shadow—woods, resins, musk, or amber.

Candle Care 101
Keep your candle burning beautifully with these tips:
- Burn long enough to melt the entire top layer—this prevents tunneling.
- Limit burns to 4 hours at a time.
- Keep wicks trimmed and wax free of debris.
- Stop burning when ½ inch of wax remains—don’t let it burn to the bottom.
- If burning multiple candles, keep them at least 3 inches apart.
- Always use a heat-safe surface.
- Spot a “mushroom” on the wick? Trim it before relighting.

Once your candle has burned its last, give it a second life:
- Pop it in the freezer to remove leftover wax (perfect for wax warmers).
- Repurpose the jar or tin—think organizers, planters, or spooky decor.
- Or recycle it (check your local guidelines).
